Rheumatoid arthritis is a common type of arthritis. It occurs in about one percent of the general population, and is more common in women than men—about three to one. It often presents with pain, swelling, and stiffness in small joints, typically in the hands and feet, but can continue to involve larger joints, such as the ankles, elbows, wrists, or knees.
